How old do you have to be to buy a ZIPPO?

Im 14 and am wondering how old you have to be to buy a zippo in Spokane Washington.

Also let me be clear im not a smoker and dont plan on being one.|||Buying a lighter isn't illegal.|||There's no legal age limit for buying a lighter. They are, after all, used for things other than smoking.

Keep in mind, though, that clerks/shopkeers don't have to sell it to you if they don't want to. If that happens, just go somewhere else.|||you can buy a zippo whenever you want. you can't buy lighter fluid for it til 18

Where can I get a zippo customized with an image of my choosing?

Is there any websites or companies that you know about where I can get a customized image engraved onto a zippo? I've searched everywhere for the type of zippo that I want (a plain chrome zippo with an engraving of a crow) but I can't find anything outside of the zippos with an image from the movie, the crow. so if anyone knows where I can find anything like what I'm talking about, I would greatly appreciate your response.|||If you have an image in mind, just search on 'custom zippo engraving' and you will find many sites on-line, like this one, that do custom engraving on zippo lighters:

Zippo lighter slides out of casing easier than it should?

I have a Zippo windproof lighter and the actual lighter slides out of it's casing really easy and it's annoying. I know it's sliding out more than it should my friend's is harder to remove. Is there a way to make it stay in better? Something i can apply to make it stay and not slide? Thanks in Advance.|||Take the internal part out and squeeze the casing very gently with a pair of pliers. Put some masking tape on the outside of the casing so you don't scratch it. |||Take lighter out of case.

On bottom (end with cotton packing, where you refill it), use needle nose pliers and SLIGHTLY bend out a small section. Go slow and do a little at a time, testing the fit each time. If you go too much, bend it back in a little.

Is it normal that my Zippo smells a lot like lighter fluid?

Hey,

I bought myself a nice Zippo lighter yesterday. But I couldn't find any Zippo lighter fluid, so I just bought some no-name brand and used that. It works fine, but whenever I open my Zippo, it smells an awful lot like the lighter fluid... Is that normal?

Thanks!|||They always tend to smell a little, they use up fluid very fast which may be why you recognise the smell for.|||It's normal. Make sure to not overflow lighter with fluid.|||yeah it's a lighter, and as long as it lights, you need not buy Zippo fluid.|||Mine smells like diesel fuel.

Can anyone give me some history on my vintage Zippo Beechcraft Baron lighter?

I cannot find a date stamp anywhere on the case or the inner portion of the lighter. My grandfather received it with the purchase of his 60's twin-prop Beechcraft. It is a slim lighter branded with "Zippo" on the bottom of the case in a sort of handwriting script. The plane painted on the case is white and yellow, with black wing tips and pinstripes. I'm interested in how common or rare this lighter may be, and what sort of value it may hold.|||You can go to Zippos Web site. They use to have a nice guide on how to look up lighters and there age. I used it several years ago.

Can I carry my zippo lighter and cigarettes on a Southwest Airlines flight?

Can I carry my zippo lighter and cigarettes on a Southwest Airlines flight? I am leaving LAX to go to San Francisco.|||"nope, combustibles are on the FAA's banned list. You can however put them in your checked luggage and be fine."

This answer is wrong -- a lighter that has fuel in it may not be placed in checked luggage, according to the TSA. Nor are combustibles banned -- in fact, you are allowed to carry common lighters in carry-on luggage, such as a disposable lighter. The TSA also allows Zippos to be carried onboard, according the the second link.

The only way you can take your Zippo lighter with you on a plane, according to the second link, is to either carry it onboard with you (it can contain fuel), or to place it in your checked luggage, drained of fuel, in an approved case.

Your cigarettes are allowed onboard as well; however, you will only be able to smoke in designated areas.|||People really need to read the TSA web site. Cigarettes are fine either in carry on or checked bags - they not mentioned anywhere on the TSA web site.

Each person can carry on 1 (one) standard zippo or butane type lighter, and they can carry 1 (one) pack of safety matches. In their carry-on bag, into the cabin of the plane.

Torch style lighter - for pipes and cigars are NOT allowed, either as a carry-on item or in your checked baggage. Leave those at home.

Lighters are FORBIDDEN in checked luggage. If they leak, you have flammable liquid and/or gas in the cargo compartment. (Actually - you can put them into checked luggage IF and only IF they are either 1) empty of fuel, or 2) in a DOT approved case for transport of lighters - and I have no idea what one of those cases is or how you would get one.)

From the TSA website:

= = = = = =

Lighters without fuel are permitted in checked baggage. Lighters with fuel are prohibited in checked baggage, unless they adhere to the Department of Transportation (DOT) exemption, which allows up to two fueled lighters if properly enclosed in a DOT approved case. If you are uncertain as to whether your lighter is prohibited, please leave it at home.

One book of safety (non-strike anywhere) matches are permitted as carry-on items, but all matches are prohibited in checked baggage.|||Common ("Bic style") and unsealed ("Zippo style") lighters may only be carried on.

It's an American Airline restriction, but I wouldn't think they'd be too awfully different. I'm an AA flyer, so that's my only source.|||nope, combustibles are on the FAA's banned list. You can however put them in your checked luggage and be fine.|||no....9/11

Can I refill a Zippo lighter with lighter fluid from other lighters?

Need to refill my zippo for the first time, i know how to do it but was wondering if i can use lighter fluid from another lighter (a regular one)? Or do i have to buy some from a shop (I'm not old enough to buy them from the shop.)|||Only use petrol which is specially made for lighters less smell to say the least. Don't try to fill it with the gas type as the gas will just evaporate as you try to fill it.

If your too young to buy lighter fuel them you shouldn't be using one. By the way lighting a cigarette with a zippo sometimes gives of a taste to what ever you are smoking|||Regular lighter - any lighter fluid will do. Butane lighter, any butane lighter fluid will do. If you are not old enough to buy lighter fluid then why even have a lighter? Hopefully you are not smoking as that is just putting poison into your lungs.|||Drew;

Liquid lighter fluid only, nothing from a high pressure can.

How much does a zippo lighter with fluid and flints cost.?

I want a regular zippo no engravings or design on it just a basic finish and a bottle of fluid.|||Hello there,

You can get a plain Zippo for $12.99. A can of lighter fluid is $3 to $6 depending on the brand and size. Flints are about $2 for a pack of 5. The new Zippo will come with a flint in it.

Later,

What is the best way to stretch leather.. I have to stretch it for a Zippo lighter will fit into this pouch?

I found this real nice pouch made of genuine leather that attachs to a mans belt and I want to stretch it so I can fit a Large Zippo type lighter in it... about a half inch%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;|||Dampen the leather, and get it warm, then slowly stretch it out to fit.|||get it wet|||Stretch it while it is wet. Use stretch leather products or water.|||You can stretch it some, but i don't think you can stretch that much.

Try wetting the pouch with hot water and while it is still soaking wet put the Zippo inside it and let it dry. Works to make leather shoes fit.|||When I was in the Army the best way I found to break in a new pair of leather boots was to get them soaking wet and wear them all day (hot water sprayed on them all day while pulling KP) at the end of the day rubbing them down well with mink oil. I would say soak the pouch in hot water while putting something similar in size to the Zippo into the pouch. Do this slowly over time (I'm guessing 24 to 48 hours) when you can get the object all the way in take it out of the water and oil it well, I recommend Mink Oil. Don't take the filler object out until the leather is thoroughly dried and well oiled or it will shrink back up on you. Hope this helps.|||If water doesn't work, you can get "Shoe Stretch" at any shoe store.|||wet it and wedge the zippo in it, if you don't want the zippo wet, use one of your kids blocks or something the same size.

while the leather is wet and the whatever is inside it, heat it up, slowly, just place it in the oven on a baking pan on warm and turn it every 5 minutes or so until its dry|||Alcohol.|||I know people use alcohol to strecht their shoes... maybe that will work

Where can a fourteen year old kid buy a zippo lighter?

Hi, I am fourteen and I want to buy a zippo lighter. I have heard that you can't buy them at gas stations because they are considered a tobbaco product . I would like to what store would let me buy one. I do not smoke.|||Try everywhere....

Just go to all the places around your house: supermarkets, gas stations, quick marts, etc. that might have them. And if they stop you just say "oh you have to be 18? i didn't know.." and they won't punish you.

You could always have an older friend/relative buy one for you or get one online.|||to the people who constantly say that you need to be 18 to buy a zippo: they're wrong. I recently got a $20 Matte Black Zippo from Walgreens a week ago along with a bottle of Ronsonol lighter fluid. How can i tell if my zippo is a real and not a fake?

I bought a zippo at a kiosk in a mall and not sure if it is a real zippo lighter or just a fake? How can I tell?|||Hello there,

Zippo marks the bottom of the case with its Company name (Zippo) and a date code for the date the case was manufactured. If you pull the works out of the case (like you were going to add fuel), you will see markings on the works. Again, the company name and the date the works was manufactured. I think Zippo has an explanation of the date codes on its web site. The case and the works may not be made in the same month.

Is there an age restriction on buying a zippo lighter?

I live in Scotland, I'm not sure what the age restriction on buying a zippo lighter from Timpsons is.|||I don't think theres an age restriction on empty lighters, but there's an age restriction (18+) on the fuel.

Can you use regular lighter fuel e.g Ronson in a Zippo, and will it void the warranty?

I am new to all the refillable lighter thing. But i was wondering if i could use regular lighter fluid (not zippo) and if it will void the warranty.

I would use Zippo brand fuel it is just i live on a small island where it is not available and no one will deliver to here because it is dangerous.|||Any fuel you want just do not tell zippo.|||This Has been answered before :)

No. I've had mine repaired by them before and they do not ask what type of fluid you use. They *recommend* thier own brand for obvious reasons. They want more buisness, but lighter fluid is lighter fluid, and to the best of my knowledge they are all 100% Naphtha. I haven't ever seen any other ingredient listed on any brand. Use whatever brand you want. Zippo will never know if you are using Ronsonol, Zippo, or some other brand.

Alan|||Ronson is all i have ever used in my zippo so am not sure about he warranty but there is nothing really to go wrong with a zippo so i would'nt worry|||Nobody cares what kind of fuel you use.

What can I use as fuel for my Zippo lighter? Besides Zippo brand fuel?

Can you bring zippo lighters onto Southwest airplanes?

I am flying within the state (not passing state borders). Can I bring a zippo lighter onto the airplane or will security confiscate it?|||Yes, you may -- the TSA allows a Zippo lighter to be carried onboard a plane in your carry-on luggage, according to the links below.|||Not if it's considered a torch lighter:

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/sop/index.s鈥?/a>

Regular lighters, yes, under certain conditions. However, I'm a bit confused on what those conditions are. One is obviously, if the lighter is empty, it's fine. But, some sources claim (if full) you can carry it on w/o it being in a certain DOT approved bag, while the link below says it does need to be in a special bag.

If that lighter is valuable to you, you may want to consider leaving it at home. If not, feel free to test the waters..|||The TSA web page specifically, and clearly, says:

Standard zippo type and disposable lighters are OK in carry-on luggage

and

Lighters are forbidden in checked luggage unless they are empty of fuel OR are put into a specific kind of case.

See the "flammable items" section:

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/p鈥?/a>

Torch type lighters are NEVER allowed.

If you want to be extra careful, leave it at home, and buy a cheap disposable one at your destination.|||You can bring it with you but only if its the absorbed fuel type. Zippo is making a torch lighter that is not allowed

How long does a Flint last on a zippo lighter?

I just got a zippo lighter lucky ace, how long does the Flint last on it if I keep flickering it from time to time|||if you strike it 6-7 times a day, it will last about a month.

it also depends on the kind of flint, there are copper and other metal type flints which last slightly less then one made from flint.|||Hello there,

I use a Zippo quite a bit on a daily basis. A flint will last me more than 2 months. How fast you use up the flint will depend on your usage. But that should give you some idea of how long the flint will last.

Where in Singapore Changi airport can I buy Zippo brand lighters?

I'm after names of specific shops in Singapore Changi, as I have not much time when I transit there. I wouldn't have enough time to stroll around.

Also, how much would Zippo there cost?|||I was just at Changi airport 3 days ago. I went to several duty free shops and the local gift shops but I don't recall seeing any Zippo lighters. Your best bet would be to visit a duty free shop since Zippos are U.S.-made lighters. It's hard to tell you where to go because you might be at the opposite end of the airport depending on where your boarding gate is but there is a duty free shop pretty much at every wing of the airport.

From where can I get extra flints for zippo?

First consider what you paid for him. Then consider the amount of training you have put in him and his capabilities at this time. If he is out of a TB mare, by a QH sire, I am assuming he is not registered. But given the fact that he is doing well under saddle, also consider this as an asset. Price him according to what you have already put in him plus the amount of training. Since he is not a registered QH, The "Pine Bar" will not have a lot to do with getting a lot more than you paid for him. Good luc k|||He is a registered (appendix) QH. What's the difference between Zippo fluid and gasoline?

I know Zippo fluid has naptha in it, but naptha is a pretty vague term, from what I read.

I know they smell similar; I like the smell of both of them. =^.^=

(In b4 "you huff them," I don't...)|||Naptha is a rather broad term, and can actually be used to cover various categories of boiling point ranges of low molecular weight hydrocarbons.

Gasoline is a much more complex mixture of various hydrocarbons and heterocyclic compounds, and generally has a higher boiling point. In addition, gasoline has quite a few additive added for engine performance, and in many places, ethanol.

Zippo lighter fluid actually contains a mixture of simple aromatic hydrocarbons, and a few cyclic hydrocarbons. See the link if you wish to get into more detail. But you can expect the ratios to change between batches.|||Both are made from hydrocarbons (petroleum).

Gasoline is a further refinement of naptha (lighter fluid).

About how long can one keep the flame lit on a Zippo lighter?

Ive heard that plastic disposable lighters should not be held on for more than ten seconds, however Zippo's much more rugged construction seems to allow a flame to burn for a much longer time frame and could second as a mini lantern or even an emergency candle. Is there an official limit expressed by Zippo as to how long one can hold the flame without causing permanent damage or any other malfunction? If there is none, then what is the longest time anyone has left their Zippo lighter on for?|||ive used mine as a candle before and i let it burn till it ran out of lighter fluid, but it wasnt full, the only thing is the lighter was really hot and i burnt myself...and my friends|||I expect a Zippo lighter would stay lit until it ran out of fuel. (Please hurry this needs to be done by 6 O-clock Oklahoma!)|||No! You do not want your friend to inhale the ignited gas fumes when lighting his cigarette. You wouldn't be fixing a thing by contaminating his lighter with the wrong fuel. It's best you leave it empty than to put gasoline in it.

It's not a matter of combustability, it's a matter of toxicity.|||No, do not use gas. It has entirely different properties from lighter fluid and at the least. could mess up the lighter and at worst, burn down your house.|||Yes, while many say you can't, you can. Will butane eventually evaporate out of a zippo lighter pad?

I found a zippo in my work's lost and found, and asked what you normally fill them with, two different people said butane (and knowing nothing about this stuff, I didn't bother to look it up, I just found a butane refill kit in the sporting goods section). Anyways, now there's butane gas eminating in the lighter, and I'm just now seeing on the zippo website that it only uses lighter fluid. If i open it up and let it sit for a day or two will all the butane evaporate, or is it too dangerous to put a second type of fuel into now? I don't know how the two combustables would react with each other, so I'm just trying to keep from blowing a hand off. Opinions?|||You fill them with a liquid, not a gas.

Butane is a gas at room temperature, so you need to put in lighter fluid. (available at all good tobaconists) I would think all the butane has gone by now. What you might try is lighting it (at arms length) and the chances are nothing will happen. Then fill it with lighter fluid. Not sure what they use. But dont use petrol, its explosive in many cases.

Just found out, Butane boils (ie becomes a gas) at -0.5c. So in other words, theres no butane left in your lighter. You are safe to proceed with lighter fluid.

Have also just found out: Lighter FLUID (not lighter GAS, which as you rightly say is butane) is normally Naptha, a petroleum distillate. Its not the same as napthalene. But basically you want to go and by a bottle of lighter fluid for wick type lighters.|||If you leave your lighter open for a couple of days, all the butane will evaporate and you can safely refill it with lighter fluid. There is no reaction that will occur between the two types of fuel, so you're safe on that front; I'd just worry about a minor explosion if you light the zippo that's under a blanket of combustible gas like butane.

I will empty out all the lighter fluid to transport it, but does anyone know if I can get it through? Oh and I am checking my bag.|||You can bring a Zippo lighter in your carry on luggage with fuel. The ban on common lighters was lifted a few years ago, "torch type" lighters remained banned. If you do put it in your checked luggage, it must not have any fuel.

I travel frequenty with a lighter in my carry on luggage and have never had one confiscated. Here's the TSA policy on lighters:

Lighters without fuel are permitted in checked baggage. Lighters with fuel are prohibited in checked baggage, unless they adhere to the Department of Transportation (DOT) exemption, which allows up to two fueled lighters if properly enclosed in a DOT approved case. Torch lighters are banned completely.

How to make my zippo lighter more reliable?

My zippo lighter is unreliable and will only sometimes work.

I have replaced my wick and keep it full, yet it still lights less than 10% of the time I spark it.

anyone know of some tips to make it more reliable?|||First, use only Zippo or Ronson fuel... other fuels can leave carbon or waxy residues. They also may not ignite reliably.

SECOND, take a Q-Tip soaked in fuel and wipe clean all the sooty deposits in the chimney and around the flint %26amp; flint wheel (Best done with the wick OUT). These deposits can prevent the spark from reaching the wick.

AND of course, you can always make use of Zippo's repair services.

And what do you use to refill them %26amp; how much are the refills?|||the refill is very cheap, its like 2 dollars. usually u may have to refill it after perhaps, two weeks, (i personally refill it only after 3 weeks or more) if he or she smokes heavilly. however, people do not mind, as thats the 'colours' of having and owning a zippo. besides that, usually zippo owners bring their zippos usually when they think the occasion is important to them, in which maybe a touch of elegance by using is a zippo is needed, and sometimes that occasion could just be a drink at a bar with friends. the point here is that, they might just carry a normal lighter if the feel that its not necessary to bring their zippos along. bout the refill can, usually there'll be a tip that will allow the oil to be filled into the zippo.

and one more thing, a person who appreciates other people gifts will never get annoyed about the gifts he or she received. so don't bother bout it. :P

How do you refill Zippo lighters with the butane aerosol can?

Hi everyone,

I'm having trouble refilling my zippo lighter. I bought a can of zippo butane fuel but its got this weird pressure system i cant figure out, sort of like a hairspray can, but the nozzle is impossible to figure out how the fuel actually comes out.

The directions on the can are cryptic and dont help at all. Do you hold it upright and stick it in the zippo padding, or do you hold it downwards? I tried both ways and got my fingers frozen for some reason.

Looking for advice from someone who actually knows what refiller I'm talking about.

Someone help!|||zippos take lighter fluid, not butane...

all you do with a zippo... is pull out the piece... hold it upside down and put the bottle on top of it, upside down.. and squeeze a few times... so that there is about a tablespoon of fuel in it..

now for a butane lighter... you need to take a small object like a knife, or a screwdriver, that is really small made for eyewear or something, and prod it in the bottom of the lighter... there should be a little metal tube... smaller than a toothpick... you have to press down on that while it is upside down...

this releases the air in the lighter...

then you take your butane can and shake it up real good, and then press down with the can on to that same little tube... with the tube that is on the butane can... and let it sit for about 8 seconds... and then take it off, and then let the lighter set for about a minute before lighting, so that the gas can get room temperature...|||u r using the wrong type of fuel the stuff u need comes in a bottle and u just squirt some into the padding. the kind u have is for butane lighters only not kerosene lighters (your zippo)

hope this helps|||if your zippo is an mlp lighter it does take butane and ur just doing something wrong, but if u have a traditional zippo pocket lighter go buy some zippo lighter fluid take out the insert lift the the part that says lift to fill and fill until i leaks out of the top wipe or burn excess fuel off. trust me i know what im talking about i've been collecting zippo lighters for some time.|||Um, You don't.|||Butane Lighters are a different type of lighter than a Zippo type. How long does zippo lighter fluid last?

How long does zippo lighter fluid last in a can that's been opened, but is now closed?|||I have two different containers of lighter fluid for zippo lighters. One is a plastic container, and the other is one of the metal ones. I've had both for over 4 years and they are still as full as the last time they were used.

Each time you open one of them to fill the lighter, there may be some evaporation, but my husband and I both use these types of lighters most of the time, and our fluid supplies are still going strong.

What we seem to go through the most are the flints for the lighters.

Good luck with your own Lighter and the fluid. Just remember to re-seal the container every time you use it.

Blessings to you!

How can I replace a wick in a Zippo?

My mom bought me a Zippo for my birthday. I've never had one before so I don't know how they work, and I pulled out the wick. Upon further research, I learned that I should have left it alone. Can I put it back in or do I have to get a new one? If I can put it back, how?

Thanks in advance.|||1 - Remove the insert from the body or shell of the Zippo (by gripping the bottom of the lighter and on either side of the chimney and pulling apart) as if you were going to re-fuel it.

2- Unscrew the flint spring found on the bottom of the insert, but be careful because since it is spring-loaded it might fall out of your hand when it is unscrewed. If the flint spring screw is too tight to unscrew by hand, use a small flat screwdriver to loosen it first. You can also use the top lid of your lighter to do this as well.

3 - Put the flint spring into the empty shell of the Zippo. Tip out the flint from the bottom of the insert into the empty shell of the Zippo for safekeeping. If it does not fall right out, give it a gentle tap and it should fall right out.

4 - Remove the felt pad and any spare flints (if you keep spares between the felt and the cotton wadding) and set those too in the Zippo shell. Set the Zippo shell aside.

5 - Using the tweezers or needle-nose pliers, pull out the cotton wadding one piece at a time. You'll notice that it is not all one big wad of cotton but many small overlapping wads. As you set them aside, lay them in more or less the same order or configuration as they were inside the insert. (this will be helpful later).

6 - Insert the new Zippo Wick into the wick hole by way of the chimney. Pull it through so that there is only as much wick in the chimney as will reach the top of the chimney.

7 - Using your pliers, tweezers, or little finger, bend the wick within the insert so that it won't fall out through the hole as you work.

8 - Begin to replace the cotton wadding in reverse order than you pulled it out. The pieces each should have some shape that you can fit together like a puzzle.

9 - As you replace the cotton, make sure to bend and weave the wick through and between pieces of the cotton wadding. You should run out of length of wick before you run out of cotton.

10 - Replace the felt pad (along with any flints that belong beneath it). Replace the flint. Insert and screw the flint spring until it won't turn any more. There is no need to screw too tightly as long as it does screw in all the way so that the lighter will close properly.

11 - If you used a bit of the length of the wick as a handle in step 6, trim the excess wick so that it is level with the chimney.|||The wick should have a wire inside of it. Open the lighter and pull the core out (the entire metal piece). Looking at the bottom, you should see a small hole in the middle of the stuffing (next to the larger hole with a screw in it that is used for the flint). Turn the core right-side up, start feeding the wick back through the hole it cam out of until the wire comes out the bottom of the hole. Pull the wire through the bottom until there is just enough wick at the top.

If there is no wire on the wick, or if it has been trimmed to short to be able to pull it through, then you may have to buy a new wick -- they shouldn't be too expensive.

I've been told that every so often on a Zippo lighter you have to pull the wick up and clip it so that some newer wick is exposed. Does anyone know about how often that is or when I know I should do that? Thanks!|||It all depends on how much you use the lighter, and how long you leave the lighter on at a time. Can you use any kind of lighter fluid for a zippo lighter?

My grandma gave me my grandpas old zippo lighter from the 70s or 80s. Do you have to use zippo lighter fluid or can you use any? And are there any precautions to take since it hasnt been used in like 20 years. It still makes a spark. And how do you fill it.|||You'll find everything you need to know on the Zippo website. Or ask someone who has one.

To fill it, hold the outer case in one hand and the cooling grille in the other and pull. Lighter fluid is added to the white fluffy stuff inside until it is wet (not full!)

Use any brand of lighter fluid and nothing else. It is safer and using other things can make the flame stink and smoky.

Precautions: fill it and try it outside, not indoors!

I have a problem with keeping my zippo lit?

Can anyone tell me the problem my zippo won't keep lit even in a slight breeze or even if you breath on it. It used to be windproof but now its not, I've tried everything could it possibly be my wick?|||You are correct. Most likely this is caused by the wick not able to be saturated with the needed amount of lighter fluid. I would try replacing the wick if it were me.|||Wicks usually don't ever go bad - in fact, if you leave it alone save for a few squirts of lighter fluid inside the chimney every now and then to clean it off, you'll probably never have to trim it, either. You should check the amount of fluid, usually that's the problem. When mine get low on fluid, the flame gets small and goes out very easily.

What kind of lighter fluid can I put in a zippo lighter?

My dad gave me his dead Zippo lighter. I know how to refill it, but can I just put charcoal lighter fluid in it or do I have to use the real fluid they sell that is made for zippo lighters?|||If you fill a Zippo with charcoal lighter fuel, you can probably say goodbye to yer eyebrows, nose hairs, or any other part of your body close to the explosion when it happens.

If you put butane in a regular Zippo, yer gonna have a boatload of problems. Unless, of course, it has the little thingie on the bottom for butane fuel and actually runs on butane.

Regular Zippos run quite well on Ronsonol Lighter Fuel, just saturate the cotton after you remove the case. Ronsonol is available just about anywhere and it's cheap. Or at least cheaper than buying a whole new Zippo when you try to fuel it with butane or a visit to the burn unit.|||Butane "lighter fuel" is not a fluid at atmosphere pressure. It'll just turn to gas and go away as soon as you try putting it into the wick.

Gasoline is crap. Any kind won't work well, and will probably clog and require total cleaning of the wick %26amp; lighter. Kerosene or Deisel; worse.

The web site also specifically says that all lighters are prohibited in checked luggage, unless they are either empty (which yours is), or they are inside of a special DOT approved transport case.

Can you take lighter fluid from a bic or other lighter and put them them in a zippo?

Also, can you take lighter fluid for a grill and put in a zippo lighter? If not yes to either of the above, where can I buy lighter fluid?|||No.

Regular lighters use compressed Butane. Zippos don't. They use light petroleum distillate or synthetic isoparaffinic hydrocarbon.

EDIT: You can buy lighter fluid at hardware stores, some grocery stores, liquor stores, or even gas stations. They sell it all over. Or you can order it online from zippo.com.

EDIT 2: As for your grill question, are you asking if you can put propane in a zippo? No.|||Hello there,

Take the fluid from a Bic and put it in a Zippo? No. The Bic and other disposable lighters use butane. If you open the lighter the fluid becomes a gas and goes into the air. You cannot tranfer it to a Zippo. Also, even if you could transfer it to the Zippo, it would not work in the Zippo. The Zippo is designed for a liquid lighter fluid.

Charcoal lighter fluid in a Zippo? Well you could get it in there. But it is not safe to use because of the flash point. You could get seriously injured and you will destroy your Zippo. This is a terrible idea. Do not try it.

Where to buy? Cigarette lighter fluid is commonly available. Of course tobacco shops have it. So do drug stores, discount stores (like Wal-mart) and even most grocery stores.

Later,|||There is butane fuel inside the bic and you can't light a zippo with butane. You would need lighter fluid for zippos. If the parts needing fixed involves the repair of the tank Zippo will probably replace the tank complete with new flints and wick. If it is a case problem the case will be replaced and the tank and associated parts will be the same as you sent in. But if the tank will not seal with a new case, they will more than likely send you a new lighter. I have found they seldom repair a lighter, they replace the defective part or parts.|||I think the wick is replaced as part of the service. You probably could have found that out on the zippo site in less time than it took to post it here. Google is your friend|||No just the lighter. You will need to replace them yourself. How do i clean my matte black zippo?

I bought a matte black chicago bulls champion zippo recently and i got it a little dirty and dont know how to clean it. I would love any help on that. For all those zippo guys if you know what to do please tell me.|||Hello there,

I assume you mean the outer case is dirty. If so, take the works out and wash the case off with soap and water. Dry it thoroughly before you put the works back in. That should clean most types of dirt off.

Later,|||remove the insert and put a cloth in some warm water with soap/washing-up liquid, give it a good scrub all over and dry it off, then you can put the insert back in

How do i fix the flint/striker on my zippo?

I have a zippo, god knows how old, and the striker doesnt throw sparks anymore, so what can i do to fix this?|||You need to replace the flint. Go to a smoke shop or even Walmart and you can get a replacment flint. Once you do that refill with fluid and you will be good to go.|||I could do this, but suggest it's just as easy for you. Go to Zippo online.

Obviously there aren't lighter repair shops around, like Dry Cleaners, but Zippo does service it's own products, or can direct you to someone who can.

Steven Wolf

Ok so I did it anyway. You might begin at this link|||You can actually buy new flints if you have used the ones that are built into the bottom. Slide it out, and you will find a tiny screw in the bottom of the body of the lighter which leads to a small tube. There are flints in there. You simply replace the flint, and the lighter works again.

If there are no flints in your lighter, simply buy some more. They are fairly easy to find. If a place has lighter fluid, they usually have flints, as well. They are super cheap, and not hard to replace at all. I can replace them in my lighter with no problem. (My problem seems to be remembering where I put the lighter fluid and/or buying some more.)

I hope that helps.|||pull it apart as you would to fill it there is a tiny screw inside unscrew it and pull it out with the spring insert new flint reinstall the spring and screw your good to go|||buy flint for a zippo lighter at the store, then remove the screw from the bottom of the lighter, remove it and you will see a spring put a new flint in the hole that the spring came out of then screw the spring back in and it will spark again! How to get rid of scratches on a zippo lighter?

I just got this zippo lighter called,"lucky Ace" but i accidently droped it and made like 2 or 3 scratches on it and there like 2 and a half centimers long how can i remove those scratches?|||You can try some very fine buffing compound and rub the compound gently into the scratches, if they are any deeper I would send it back to the Zippo manufacturer in Bradford, PA. Zippo usually guaranties their lighters for life.

What can I use as a substitute for Zippo fuel?

Would ordinary naphtha, white gas, rubbing alcohol or kerosene work? If so, which would work best? Is there a significant advantage to the Zippo brand?|||NO NO NO NO!! You need to use lighter fluid in a lighter. Zippo isn't the only company to make it, they are all about the same, but you NEED to use lighter fluid unless you want to either have a lighter that doesn't work at all, one heck of a big fire or your hands or face burned quite badly.|||You can use Ronsonol, Naphtha, and Coleman Fuel. I would suggest coleman fuel, it's like $9 a gallon vs about $59 a gallon for Zippo fluid, and $55 for Ronsonol fluid.

Why does my Zippo lighter take so long to light up?

I have used Zippo lighters for a number of years now but I have noticed that once they have been used for a year or more they become increasingly difficult to light.

Is it something with the wick I need to address? I just don't get it.|||If you're getting a spark from the flint, it can ONLY be two things.

1. The wick is too short or dirty. Using a cheaper fluid will create a "dirty" or greasy film on the wick causing a tough light.

2. Low or cheaper fluid.

hope this helps

I don't want to order online but i do want to buy some at a local store around my neighborhood. I searched stores and they say that they have zippo accessories but I am not sure if they sell the lighter fluid there. Would Ralphs, Albertsons, 7 Eleven, Walmart, or Vons sell lighter fluid?|||Yes, any of these places will sell it. What do you use to refill a zippo lighter?

It isn't the brand zippo but it's that style someone told me you can use the same lighter fluid that you use for a grill, but that didn't sound right.|||Only use fluid designed to be used in lighters. If you use the wrong kind, the results could be very dangerous. Different fluids have different flash points and combustion rates.

If it's a lighter like my dad had, turn it over, slide the case off, and saturate the inside with the fluid. It should be some type of fibrous material. You'll also need to get flints.

If you're not sure how to fill it, you might be able to get help at a cigar shop.|||definitely go to a pipe / tobacco shop.

How can I get a Zippo without my parents knowing?

I'm only 12 years old. My parents disprove smoking and my dad doesn't like anything to do with smoking or illegal things (like burning your own fire in your back yard or taking fruit from a tree that has an over abundant supply). So he's going to say no if my Mom got me a Zippo because she'd tell my dad. I don't smoke illegaly, never will. And I just want it for the American pride, but my parents won't understand. How can I get a Zippo?|||A Zippo is a brand of lighter. Just have someone take you down the local gas station (or ride your bike there) and buy a Zippo lighter. The gas station attendants aren't going to care how old you are - they CAN sell you a lighter (obviously they CAN'T sell you cigarettes). Most gas stations should have them. If your local one doesn't, find the closest place that does and have someone drive you there. Find an older teen around you who has a car and doesn't mind taking you. Ask nicely!|||You should be able to buy a lighter yourself. The age requirement only applies to the cigarettes themselves, not the lighter. On the other hand, you have to be 18 in some states to buy the fluid. If there is an empty Zippo for sale without the fluid, it should be legal. You can tell the cashier, if they ask, that you are buying it as a gift for a relative. As for your parents, if they find it, as long as you never plan on filling it with lighter fluid, maybe you can persuade them to let you keep it if you never get it filled.|||Smoking tobacco is not the answer youngen your parents are right. You should listen to them they been around awhile.

I suffered Head and neck cancer from smoking so don't start smoking it can kill you or damage your body.

Go to a cancer unit and see what goes on ask to be showed around the cancer unit. Because if you smoke you could end up just like all those people and cancer treatments suck. I took 42 treatments of radiation and 3 treatments of chemo

So please don't smoke and ex smoker and a Cancer survivor I am.|||its easy. all you have to do is ride your bike down to the local convenience store, by the lighter and say its for your dads birthday, and go home and hide it in your garage or attic or something. ; ) just do it|||You can get a zippo by waiting until you're 18. Jeepers, life is not about getting away with things. Just the fact that you want it even though they don't want you to have it, proves you're too young for it.

.|||Walgreens %26amp; most any other drug store (better prices usually than gas stations)

Also is there a youtube video to show me how to put it in the zippo..?

Thankyouuuu|||Take the lighter to a local store and ask the clerk to show you how to fill the lighter. Then you can buy the fluid they use. Don't smoke while filling the lighter.|||Yeah you can buy it....get "Ronsonol Lighter Fuel" you can get it at any CVS -store The Fuel is a liquid and you poor it into the bottom of your Zippo once you pulled the cover off.

It comes in a yellow 8 oz bottle with blue print....can't find it at CVS try a tabacko store...Cost I believe around $2 and last me about a year.

TIP: collect empty one way Lighter and get the flint stones out they last a lot longer than the original ones.|||At 16 you can buy gasoline, so I see no reason why benzene would be any more restricted, unless maybe you tell them you're a budding arsonist.

Where can I buy a zippo flint in England?

I live in Swindon, England and own a zippo. My flint is almost completely worn and I need to buy a new one. Where can I do this, can I go to Asda, or Tesco's, for example? Or just a newsagents? It seems to me that just a normal newsagent wouldn't sell a rather specialised product like a zippo flint.|||I always just tear up old disposable lighters and take the flint. Does Anyone Know How Long An Average ZIPPO Will Burn Before The Fuel Runs Out?

ZIPPO's are one of the few lighters that you don't need to press a button to keep the lighter burning. Once it ignites it will keep burning until you stop it yourself.

Can I put Lighter Fluid in a Zippo after having Gasoline in it?

My boyfriend wants me to put lighter fluid in his zippo lighter but he had gasoline in it before.

Is it ok for me to just put lighter fluid in it again?|||That's dangerous! You should replace the cotton and the wick and then put lighter fluid in. Gasoline has a tendency to explode so you'll want to make sure it's all out of there just to make sure. It might still be OK if you don't but I wouldn't take any chances...if you like your eyebrows that is :)|||given that i have been a zippo fan and collector for years, i will tell you that gasoline is not good to put in there at all, ever. it smells bad evaporates too quickly and is very dangerous but lit and not. even your pocket will become quite explosive. what i would do is separate the case form the cell and leave it like that at least overnight so that some of the smell will dissipate, THEN refill it with lighter fluid, either rosignol or zippo brands is what i used in mine for years.|||yes it wont hurt any thing, you will just taste gasoline for a while.best to take it apart and let it sit for a couple days if you dont want to taste it|||whoa what an unpyro get ronsonol its at CVS or any store like that it works the best for wick lighters

This site looks like it might be able to do what you want. But again, expensive.

http://www.anythingengraving.com/|||I suggest you check the yellow pages for engravers and imprinters who do custom work. Also check with local jewellery stores--even if they can't do it (most stores do lettering engraving), they may be able to direct you to somewhere you can get it done. Keep asking and never send the item off to the stores engraver to 'see' if they can do it--if they have to do that, they've never been asked and they can't do it. It will just take 2 weeks to get a no. It will take time for a custom engraving as artwork will need to be made to create the template. It WILL be expensive

How much lighter fluid are you meant to put in a Zippo?

I've always found Zippo's method of storing fluid - soaking cotton wool - rather crude.

1. Are you meant to fill it till it's thoroughly soaking (I read it's meant to be so damp that lighter fluid can pour out of it!)?

2. Is this cotton wool system really that effective?

3. Once fully filled, how long can it be expected to last?|||it is a crude method, beware not to fill too much cos it leaks in your pocket and gives a petrol burn down your leg, take it from one who knows and has done it.

i went back to disposable lighters.

and also there is no set limit to filling or knowing how long it will last, at least when you use other lighters you get some warning that it is dying, zippo's just stop working. not a reliable form of ignition but a great gadget to play with if you are an arsonist.|||soak it until you see liquid.|||I usually, when it is dry, pull the felt back, and fill and let absorb, I do this until the fuel isn't on top of the cotton, however I can see that the fuel has drenched the cotton but its barely absorbed. Depending on your lighter it can ange from a day to a month, Usually Zippos last at least 2 weeks, mine can go a month or so. Go in Christ|||Personally, I don't think it's worth the hassle. Disposable lighters are so much easier and safer|||Do what they say. Fill it til it's pretty saturated. They are unique and very effecient. They are collectors items if they are old or unique. Why use it if you think it crude?? That's wierd. It's very effective and lasts as long as it lasts depending on use...duh. That only makes sense. Be careful, don't burn yourself.|||soak it but you dont want it to pour out you'll catch your hand on fire.|||Lighter fuel can be supplied in capsules for a single refill.

These hold 5ml of fuel.|||You add lighter fluid until the cotton wool is soaked. The thicker peice at the base shouldn't be soaked through though.|||Don`t overfill,if overfilled shake out excess fluid, because any leakage will cause chemical burns on leg if placed in pocket. The cotton only needs to be slightly damp, and I would guess under normal usage you would get approximately a carton of cigarette's lit with one fill.

Using tweezers, remove all packing from fuel chamber. Replace packing in small pieces, interweaving the wick between the packing. Replace felt pad, flint and flint spring and screw. Tighten screw completely, so the lighter will close correctly.|||If you want to have your Zippo restored to factory specs, send it back to them they have a life time repair guarantee. How can I make different color fire for my Zippo Lighter?

For example, what is a recipe for a colored flame such as green. But It has to be safe to be in the Zippo lighter. (ie. Non corrosive)

I'm looking for something that is as safe as lighter fluid/butane.

Thank you!|||Ok, there are a couple of metals that will burn different colors:

copper will turn ur flame green, it is not dangerous. Take a fine piece of copper and place it on the flame of ur zippo, you'll see it burn green after the flame burns off the oxide coating.

Other colors are very dangerous (lithium, cesium, sodum, all very reactive metals) so i suggest u use copper. Calcium will burn ur flame red, but i don't know where u can obtain that.

How can i destroy the chrome finish on my zippo without using sandpaper?

i have a zippo lighter that i had to replace the lid on with another zippo lid. This lid has some of the chrome worn off and showa s dull brass looking finish that i cant make shine. I like this look, how can i make the rest of my zippo look like this?...im willing to try anything|||i would think that the look is from wear. so accelerate the wear of the new parts... brass tumbler (bullet reloading stuff)... rock tumbler with no rocks....

Possible put into an empty coffee can... fill can half way with sand... tape up lid and roll for a few hours?|||use rough steel wool|||seperate the outer casing from the inner workings and boil the outer case. it should give it a frosted look.|||Ther are wonderful chemicals out there that can do this quick and easy for you...

let it soak in straight solution of a calcium, lime and rust remover... the Salts in this mixture should do the job...it did the very thing to my sink stopper.|||no way that you yourself can do at home. the chemicals required are not something untrained people should use. go to a chroming shop. they can strip the old chrome off, as they have to do that to rechrome things. otherwise, you have to wear it off by some means like steel wool or sandpaper.|||If your like a typical person with a lighter you carry it in your pocket, and in your pocket it gets rubbed by the jeans, and your loose change. I would try rubbing some pennies or something on it.|||If it was one of the "real" ZIPPO lighters that are made in Bedford, Pa. you could just go to www.zippo.com True Zippo lighters have a life time warranty on them and all you would have to do is ship it to them and they will either fix it or replace it free.|||Best thing is fingernail polish remover. (BE CAREFUL,SEE BELOW)

Trust me on this.

There are two types of remover. Acetone, and non-acetone. Choose the Acetone, it's much stronger.

With a rag, or paper towel, just rub it on until you get the results you need. After finishing be sure to wipe your lighter down well, BEFORE using it, as nail polish is flammable.

Wella--- New lighter.|||drive over it with your car. Maybe paint one tire and back over it to make tire marks. That'll destroy it.|||use a caustic paint remover or muratic acid

Well, I just got this new zippo from my friend, because his dad sells them but they gave me one for my birthday present. And I am wondering, it's been at least a week and the fuel has already died... I'm a bit disappointed. But is that like the orginal life-span before the zippo has to be refueled? Or did they give me a used zippo !!!?|||mine lasts about a week, and i use it constantly
