As far as I know there are no markings to guide you. You have to watch the cotton batting to see when it is becoming saturated. I always lift the felt on the bottom so I can see the cotton batting. I put in a squirt or two of fluid and watch how fast the cotton batting absorbs it. When the cotton battings starts to take a while to absorb the fluid, I stop there. You do not want the fluid dripping out the top (the top is down when filling).
